Bible Lesson:
Have the children open their Bibles to John 20:19 -29.

(Read the story to the children because at this age some of the children do not read smoothly, which hinders comprehension for the whole class.)

Discussion:

  • What evening was it?  The day that Jesus rose from the dead.
  • Why were the door locked where the disciples were meeting together? They were afraid of the Jewish leaders
  • Why were they afraid of them?  They were the ones who had just had Jesus killed and they were afraid that they would kill them, too.
  • Who came to see them?  Jesus
  • Where the disciples happy to see him?  Yes. They were overjoyed.
  • Who wasn’t there when Jesus came?  Thomas
  • Did he believe the other disciples when they told him that they had seen Jesus? No.  He said, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.”
  • I know people who don’t want to believe.  We call them scoffers.  Why do you think anyone would not want to believe?  Because they want to keep sinning.  They don’t want to let Jesus be the King of their lives.
  • Do you think that Thomas wanted to believe – or that he was a scoffer?  He was a disciple and loved Jesus very much.  He would have wanted to believe that Jesus was alive, but he just couldn’t without seeing Him.
  • Do you think that he prayed about this problem?
  • A week later the disciples were together in the house again.  Again the doors were locked.  And again Jesus  was suddenly there.  What did he say to Thomas?  “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.”
  • Do you think that Jesus was angry with Thomas?  I don’t think so.  I think that he was giving him reassurance so that Thomas could believe.
  • Do you ever have doubts?
  • What do you think that God wants you to do about those doubts?  Pray and ask for wisdom.  James 1:5 says,  “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.”  God will help you find the answer to your questions if you ask Him.
  • What did Thomas say that showed that he believed? “My Lord and my God!”
  • Do you think that Thomas doubted after that?  No.
  • Thomas became a great missionary to India. In fact, one of the greatest evidences of Jesus’ resurrection from the dead was the change in the disciples from hiding in fear behind locked doors, to being fearless missionaries and martyrs for Jesus.  They knew the truth, and they were no longer afraid of anything.
  • Who did Jesus say would be blessed?  Those who believe even though they haven’t seen Jesus alive themselves.
