Scripture: Joshua 9:1 – 27, 10: 1 – 14 or pages 186 – 188 in The Golden Children’s Bible

Target Age Group:  1st through 6th grade

Bible Lesson:
Have the children open their Bibles to Joshua 9 or page186 in The Golden Children’s Bible.

(Read the story to the children because at this age some of the children do not read smoothly, which hinders comprehension for the whole class.)

Discussion:

  • Why did the kings west of the Jordan wage war against Joshua and Israel?  They heard about how they had destroyed Jericho and Ai.
  • The people of Gibeon decided not to attack Joshua.  What did they decide to do instead?  To trick Joshua into making a treaty with them.
  • How did they trick him?  They put on old torn clothes and patched sandals, and packed their bags with old dry, moldy bread to make it look like they had been on a long journey.  They said they were from a distant country.
  • Why would it have been bad to make a treaty with them if they were from the promised land?  God had told them to wipe out all the inhabitants of the land. (If the children ask why God told them to do that, explain that He didn’t want the Israelites to be influenced to worship false gods and idols.  Talk about how important it is to choose friends wisely to avoid having bad influences that would lead us away from the Lord.)
  • What did Joshua and the Israelites forget to do?  They didn’t ask the Lord before they made the treaty to let them live.
  • What should you do before you make a decision? Pray and ask for God’s guidance.
  • What did the Israelites find out 3 days later?  The Gibeonites were their neighbors!
  • Why didn’t they attack them?  Because they had made a oath not to.  If they broke the oath, they would make God angry.
  • What did they do instead?  They made them their servants.
  • What did the other kings decide to do when they found out that Gibeon had made a treaty with Israel?  They decided to attack Gibeon.
  • Did Joshua let them kill the Gibeonites?  No.  They came to fight for them.
  • Why?  They had made a treaty with them.
  • What did the Lord say to Joshua?  “Do not be afraid of them; I have given them into your hand. Not one of them will be able to withstand you.”
  • Why did Joshua march his army all night from Gilgal? To surprise and confuse the armies attacking Gibeon.
  • How did God help them?  He threw down large hailstones on them, which killed more of them than the Israelites killed.
  • What did Joshua ask God to do?  to make the sun and moon stand still until the battle was completely won.
  • Did God do that?  Yes.

(How God did this is not possible for us to know.  All we need to know is that God created the world and that He is all powerful and can do anything. Read Revelation 22:5  “There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever.”  Colossians 1:17 “He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.” Psalm 74:16 “The day is yours, and yours also the night;you established the sun and moon.” Jeremiah 32:17 “Ah, Sovereign Lord, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you.”)

  • Let’s pray and ask the Lord to help us to always ask him for guidance before we make decisions and to trust him to do great and mighty things for us…

During the remaining class time do activities that help to reinforce what the children have learned. Here are some suggestions…

Memorize the verse.

The Day the Sun Stood Still photo

Have the children make a story wheel.  First print this picture of Joshua commanding the sun to stand still on card stock.  Cut the sky off at the crest of the mountains.  Make a wheel the width of the page on another piece of card stock and cut it out. Draw a sun at a spot on the outer edge of the circle. Color the sun and the rest of the circle as the sky. (Or use blue card stock and paste a yellow sun on the outer edge.) Use a paper fastener through the center of the circle and through the picture so that when turned the sun moves in an arch over the scene.

Achan’s Sin

Bible Lesson:
Have the children open their Bibles to Joshua 7

(Read the story to the children because at this age some of the children do not read smoothly, which hinders comprehension for the whole class.)

Discussion:

  • Joshua sent some of the men to Ai to do what? To spy on it.
  • What was their report when they got back? They said that there weren’t very many people who lived in Ai and that they only needed to send 3,000 fighting men.
  • What happened when they went to fight Ai?  They were defeated and 36 men were killed. They had to run away.
  • How did Joshua respond to this news?  He tore his clothes and fell face down before the ark of the covenant.
  • What did he say to the Lord? Why did you bring us across the Jordan to destroy us? The other people will find out about it, and then they’ll come and destroy us and your reputation too.
  • Have you ever heard people say something like that?  Yes. I’ve heard people say, “Why does God allow something like that to happen?”
  • But, how does God answer that question? Stand up!  What are you doing down on your face?  Israel has sinned by taking some of the devoted things… You need to destroy those things or I won’t be with you anymore.
  • Who sinned? God or Israel?  Israel did.
  • Is it God’s fault when bad things happen? No. It’s probably because of sin.  We should look at ourselves, not point a finger at God.
  • In the morning Joshua was to do what? Have the people come tribe by tribe until they found out who committed the sin.
  • Who ended up being the guilty one?  Achan
  • What does he tell Joshua? I saw a robe, two hundred shekels of silver and a bar of gold.  I wanted them, and I took them. They are buried in my tent.
  • Do you remember what God told the people about what to do with the things inside the city of Jericho?  They were supposed to take the gold, silver, bronze and iron and put it in the temple treasury.  The rest was to be destroyed.
  • What two commandments did Achan commit? Thou shalt not covet, and thou shalt not steal
  • Do you think that Achan had enjoyed the things that he took?  No.  He knew that if he wore the robe, everyone would know that that was taken from Jericho.  Everyone would know, also, if he tried to use the coins or the gold.  So, once he had them, he didn’t know what to do with them. The only thing that he could do was hide them.
  • Have you ever done something like that? (Let the children share if they want to, but don’t pressure them, and go on.) Instead of making you feel happy, sin makes you fell bad, doesn’t it.
  • Achan thought that he could hide his sin, didn’t he.  But, who knew about it all along?  God did.
  • Can you hide your sins from God? No.
  • Let’s pray and tell the Lord that we are sorry for any sins that we may have committed and thank him for sending Jesus to take our sins away…

The Battle of Jericho

In the last couple of weeks, we’ve learned that Jericho was a city that had a tall wall all the way around it. Joshua knew that he had to conquer the city.  How do you think he should do that?  Climb in with ropes. Catapult.  Shoot arrows up over the wall.  Throw bombs across the wall. etc.

Bible Lesson:
Have the children open their Bibles to Joshua 6 or pages 183-185 in The Golden Children’s Bible.

(Read the story to the children because at this age some of the children do not read smoothly, which hinders comprehension for the whole class.)

Discussion:

  • Why were the gates of Jericho shut so that nobody could go in or out?  The people were scared of the Israelites.
  • What did God instruct the people to do for six days?  The fighting men were to march around the city with seven priests carrying trumpets made of rams’ horns in front of the ark of the covenant.
  • What were they to do on the 7th day? They were to march around the city 7 times with the priests blowing the trumpets. When they heard a long blast of the trumpets the whole army was to give a loud shout.
  • What would happen after the loud shout?  The walls would fall down and the army would be able to go into the city.
  • Do you think that the Israelites understood why God was asking them to do that? No.
  • Was marching around the city, blowing horns, and shouting a normal way to fight a battle? No.
  • Do you think that we always understand why God asks us to do things?  No.  Sometimes it’s hard to understand why He does things the way He does.  We just have to trust him and obey.
  • Who was to be spared? Rahab and her family because they hid the spies.
  • Did everything happen as God said that it would?  Yes.
  • After they brought Rahab and her family out of the city, what did they do?  They burnt the city, except for the gold, silver, bronze and iron.
  • What did they do with the gold, silver, bronze and iron?  They put it into the treasury of the Lord’s house.
  • What became of Rahab and her family?  They lived with the Israelites.

Have the children build the walls of Jericho with Lego blocks.  Then have them act out the story using Lego people.  Make sure to include the red cord in Rahab’s window.

Play the Walls of Jericho game from the Catholic Blogger. When I do a file folder game in the classroom, I make enough file folders for two children to share each folder. That way everyone can see and reach the board easily. I also give each pair a dice. This keeps the game moving along quickly. Kids love these games and are quick to learn the details of the story when they play them. Have a prize for the winner, but also a prize for each contestant when playing with younger children.

Scripture: Joshua 3 and 4

Bible Lesson:
Have the children open their Bibles to Joshua 3.

Discussion:

  • What was the name of the river that the Israelites were to cross?  the Jordan
  • What instructions did the officers give the people?  Follow the priest carrying the ark of the covenant.
  • What did Joshua tell the people to do? Consecrate themselves.
  • What does consecrate mean?  To bathe themselves. To cleanse themselves from sin.
  • What did Joshua tell the priests to do?  When they got to the riverbank they were to  stand in the river.
  • What time of the year was it?  The harvest time.
  • What happens to the river during that time of the year there?  It is at flood stage.
  • What happened when the priests stepped into the river?  The river stopped flowing at a town called Adam far upstream and the people were able to cross over to the other side.
  • How is this different than the crossing of the Red Sea?  When they crossed the Red Sea they were going out of Egypt.  Now they were going in to the promised land.  (Deut. 6:23)
  • Remember that 40 years before they had sent spies into the Land and were going to go into the land.  What happened that time?  The people were too afraid to go in and fight the people.  They didn’t trust that God would help them conquer the land. So, God had them keep wandering around in the desert for 40 years.
  • What was different this time?  This time they were ready to trust and obey. (Joshua 1:16)
  • Think how exciting that this would be.  They were going to cross over into the promised land after 40 years of waiting for this to happen!  This was a very special event!
  • Why do you think that the ark of the covenant was so important? The ark represented God’s presence with them.  He was going out before them.
  • How do you think that God would have you deal with obstacles in your life?  We should consecrate ourselves by asking for forgiveness from our sins.  Praying and asking for help. Listen to God by reading the Bible.  Step out in faith and do what He’s told us to do.
  • After crossing Joshua chose 12 men, one from each tribe.  What were they to do?  Each was to take a stone from the middle of the river where the priests were holding the ark and bring them over to the camp.
  • What were the stones for?  To make a memorial. To remind themselves what God had done and to tell their children and grandchildren what God had done there.
  • How do you remember special things that God has done for you?  Tell our friends and family, write it in a journal,  take pictures of the special event, celebrate and tell each other about that special day each year, etc.
  • Let’s tell each other some special things that God has done for us. 
  • What happened when the priests came up onto the riverbank?  The river started to flow again.
  • Why did God do this miracle? So that the people would stand in awe of Joshua as they had of Moses. So that people would know that God is powerful and so that they would fear the Lord.

Rahab and the Spies

Scripture: Joshua 1:1 – 2: 24

Target Age Group:  1st through 6th grade

Welcome the children to the classroom and chat with them about their week as they gather around the table.

Pray and ask God to teach the children not just head knowledge, but also heart knowledge.

Bible Lesson:
Have the children open their Bibles to Joshua 1:1 – 2:24 or pages 178 – 181 in The Golden Children’s Bible.

(Read the story to the children because at this age some of the children do not read smoothly, which hinders comprehension for the whole class.)

Discussion:

  • Who did God put in charge of leading the people of Israel after Moses died? Joshua
  • What did God promise that He would give them?  The Promised Land
  • What commands did God give to Joshua?  Be strong and courageous.  Don’t be afraid.  Obey the Law.
  • What did Joshua tell the people to do?  Prepare food and supplies so that in three days they could cross the Jordan into the land.
  • Did the people agree?  Yes.  They said, “Whatever you have commanded us we will do, and wherever you send us we will go.”
  • Who did Joshua send first to Jericho?  Two spies.
  • What would spies be sent to do?  To see where the weakness of the enemy would be to help them know how to take the city.
  • Where did the spies stay?  With Rahab the prostitute
  • Did their visit stay secret? No.  The king found out.
  • Did Rahab turn over the spies to the kings men?  No.  She hid the spies on her roof but told the king’s men that the spies had left and sent them after them.
  • Why do you think that she helped the spies?  She believed in their God.
  • How did Rahab come to believe in the God of Israel?  They had heard stories about how God had opened the Red Sea for them and helped them win battles.
  • How is Rahab’s reaction to the Israelites different from the other people in Jericho? She believed and wanted to join the Israelites, but the people of Jericho were afraid and wanted to destroy them.
  • How are their different reactions similar to the different reactions of people today?
  • Do you see yourself as someone who joins with God and asks for salvation?  Or are you putting up walls of fear of God? 
  • How did the spies escape from the city?  Rahab let them down a rope from her window that was on the city wall.
  • What promise did the spies make to her?  That they would save her and her family when they took the city.
  • How would the Israelites know which house to spare?  Rahab was to tie a red cord in the window.
  • How does the red cord remind us of Jesus? It reminds us that all we have to do is trust in Jesus’ blood and we will be saved.
  • Can you think of another story in the Bible that was similar?  The Israelites painted their doorposts with the blood of the lamb on the Passover.
  • What did the spies say to Joshua when they returned to him? “The Lord has surely given the whole land into our hands; all the people are melting in fear because of us.”

Make a braided red cord bookmark.  This idea is from Bible School Materials.   Talk about how the red cord that saved Rahab  reminds us of the salvation that we receive through Christ’s blood on the cross.
