Bible Lesson:
Have the children open their Bibles to 1 Samuel 3 or page 217 in The Golden Children’s Bible.

(Read the story to the children because at this age some of the children do not read smoothly, which hinders comprehension for the whole class.)

Discussion:

  • Where was Samuel laying down to sleep?  In the temple.
  • What did he hear?  Someone calling, “Samuel”
  • Who did he think was calling him? Eli
  • When he ran to Eli, what did Eli say? “I did not call; go back and lie down.”
  • How many times did Samuel come to Eli? Three
  • The third time that Samuel came, what did Eli realize? God was speaking to Samuel.
  • What did Eli to say to him this time? “Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, ‘Speak, Lord, for  your servant is listening.’”
  • Do you think that God speaks to us today? Yes.
  • How can we listen to God?  We can pray and ask God to speak to us when we read our Bibles. We can listen to our parents and to our pastor or Sunday School teacher.  We can listen to our conscience.
  • When Samuel said, “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.” what did God say to him?  He told him that he was going to judge Eli and his sons for the sins that they had committed.
  • Who do you think was listening more closely to God, Hannah or Eli?  Hannah
  • Think about how different Samuel was from Eli’s sons.  Who of those three were listening more closely to God?  Samuel.
  • When God gives us warnings to do something or not to do something, what should we do?  Obey Him right away.
  • Let’s pray and ask God to help us to open our ears so that we can hear what He is saying to us so that we can obey right away….

1 Samuel 3: 10b  “Speak. for your servant is listening.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Have the children use colors or pastels to draw their own vision of the story on a sketch pad page. Or have them color a color page related to the story. Color page #1  Color page #2 Color page #3   from sermons4kids  Color page #4 from teachkidsaboutchrist.   An excellent color page book is “Through-the-Bible Coloring Pages For Ages 4-8” by Janet Skiles.  The pages are reproducible.
